Before I make my own magazine style radio show.
I need to know what genre is.
Here is a example of some types of genres.
I will need to know what one is. And by doing my own research I found a magazine style radio show on BBC Radio 4. And these were some of the topics which I could fit into in under 1 minute:
This is some of my research On Magazine Style Radio, and that on this Radio show they will be talking about Black minority in movies, arts and cultures and by how it is being reduced by each year. And that Lenry Henry will be talking about his upcoming play called Rudy's Rare Records, and that they will be talking about how record shops are becoming more rarer and rarer. And about his Dad owing a record shop.
And there were more topics which followed up but I did not have any time to get them recorded in under a minute.
My Second magazine style radio show is a show which is presented by Aleena Naylor as she discuss Churches and the lack of congregation and it is getting less purpose and function in our local towns/areas. And that she will have a guest of a Vicar which has 5 parishes, and he will speak matters about this topic. Her second topic is An arts festival which is located at Derby and it is hosted by many Derby parishes. And finally bishops are being giving a Bishop Badge in a award ceremony. But mostly on this Style show is talking more importantly about Parishes and bishops which is related under Religion.
This is a type of magazine styled radio show as of the fact that its a type of a chatty show which contains the code and the conventions of a magazine styles show. And that she is discussing topics which her audience which her target audience can relate to.
Finally, This magazine style radio show is hosted by Mark Forrest from the BBC Radio 4 station in Cornwall, and on his instalment on his show, he will be talking in depth into these 2 following topics. 1. If people eat Horse meat we can protect the future of wild ponies, so that the numbers of ponies will not decline quicker than ever before. And his final topic is about Amy Hughes who completed 53 marathons I under 53 days, and that Mark Forrest will be talking to her to discuss her experience and the pain through her painful journey. Despite this show may only be a two topic show, it may consist of more topics as the show is over 180 minutes (3 Hours) long.
I have done some research and that I found out on average how many people who listen to BBC Radio 4, and that 53,502 (000's) people listen to BBC Radio 4, and that
The show which is in Mark Forrest's show contains the following things to consist in a magazine style radio show.
Code And Conventions Of Magazine Style Radio Show:
- Topics are talked about.
- Consists of a solo audience
- Interviews (With Amy Hughes)
- A bit of dead air is picked up during the recording
- Viewers could get involved by (Phone calls, Text Messages and Social Media)
- Song playing in the background.
- No stopping in the audio
- Greeting The viewers
The Target Audience for Magazine Style Radio Shows:
Magazine style radio shoes is based upon what ever subjects they are talking about, and if it suits your age group. Most of magazine style shows are based upon peoples matters or either what is happening in your local area (As the shows will be on your local radio station).
But most of magazine style radio shows are targeted upon these sorts of people:
- Elderly People
- People who want to listen on certain matters which isn't on the news
- People who like to listen to the radio
- People who are studying media studies as their GCSE
Many Elderly people listen to magazine style radio shows as they can listen to the show and actually don't have to look at a monitor to see them talk about it. Many elderly people tune into the radio as they is what they might of had instead of the new generations of TV.
Finally, many teenagers listen to magazine style radio shows as an example because they have taking Media Studies as their GCSE and that they need to know what a magazine style radio shows is as it is under the curriculum to learn Magazine Style Radio.
How do magazine audiences relate to Radio Audiences:
They both contain the two things, which are that they are both listened/produced for radio, and that people who are listening to the radio are turning into for listening to a certain thing, and that is also what magazine style audience is listening to also. Both shows are hosted to entertain a certain person who may fall under :Age, gender, race and location. And that these subjects may be under a show, which may get people listening to that certain show.
Understanding Genre:
In Media and in Magazine Style Radio shows they always have a genre, this has been between:
Message
Sender <----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Receiver
But in Magazine Style Radio they have another term about the above. But in their case it is between:
Code
Encoder <--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Decoder
The Encoder (Sender) is the person who produces a certain service/product. For example Electronic Arts (E.A) produce many games so their example of sending something is like making FIFA, in which is sent towards a certain consumer who might be from Children to Adults who like playing video games.
Another sort of an Encoder and Decoder is an iPhone, they are made for people who want to use it as their phone or for people who just want it for a certain thing. And so that it is targeted for Teens up to Adults. As children will not know how to work it, and elders might not know how to use touch screens.
You can easily recognized a comedy Film, as there will be bright settings and that it would include funny language, and that is when you know that you are watching a comedy. But you know when you are watching a horror film as it will include dark, grimy setting and there will be weird characters and that it would be different than a comedy film as it would be completely different. E.g Light settings vs Dark settings
Our Target Audience for our own Magazine Style Radio Show
Our target audience for magazine style radio show is for TEENAGE SOCIAL MEDIA USERS.The way that we will find out our research method is that we will be interviewing teenagers who regally use any sort of Social Media and that we will be asking certain questions such as: "How many hours per day do you use social media" and also "Does you parents know that you have accounts on any sort of social media" In which we could carry out these interviews in certain ways such as: Interviewing the public face to face or either using social media to gather their ideas about the questions that we maybe asking them. And so that we can put forward these ideas and interviews towards our magazine style radio show.
And that the questions that we will be asking our target audiences is:
" How many hours do you spend on the internet per day?"
" Does your parents know that you own a social media account?"
" Do you think that the internet is a reliable place?
"How many social media account do you own?"
"Would you call your self an "Addict"?"
We can gather out our interviews in many ways, interviewing teenagers in the public, and also we can interview them through social media so that we can get an understanding of them on social media through social media
And that once we have gathered their views/matters we can make our magazine style radio show based on what the teenagers have spoken about, and that we will be making our show just targeted at teenagers who use social media, and produce it so that the teenagers who we interviewed, or people who want to listen could be entertained/satisfied by us.

Social Media Addicts:
Social networking addiction is a phrase sometimes used to refer to someone spending too much time using Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media -- so much so that it interferes with other aspects of daily life. There's no official medical recognition of social networking addiction as a disease or disorder. Still, the cluster of behaviours associated with heavy or excessive use of social media has become the subject of much discussion and research.
Researchers at Chicago University concluded that social media addiction can be stronger than addiction to cigarettes and booze following an experiment in which they recorded the cravings of several hundred people for several weeks. Media cravings ranked ahead of cravings for cigarettes and alcohol.
Can Social Media Affect Your Health?
1. Sleep. Using a laptop, cell phone, or iPad late at night can seriously mess with your sleep patterns and habits, potentially leaving you with a sleep disorder. Late night use is also associated with stress and depressive symptoms, and that your sleeping scheduled will be mess up your life, and that it may affect any life events such as work.
2. Depression. A Swedish study found that participants who felt the need to have their cell phones constantly accessible were more likely to report depressive mental health symptoms.
3. Addiction. Several studies have actually suggested that the brains of technology abusers develop a certain pattern of change over time. Studies also suggest that the amount of times technology abusers check their gadgets are just enough to trigger the addiction-oriented parts of our brains.
How To Treat Social Media Addicts:
Some organisations are setting up a retreat to a forest within the UK. When there they will be no communication with the outside world, and that you will be left with no sort of technology and that they will not be able to use social media. This is so that people who are addicted to social media can be put off a bit of social media and that in the end they cannot be addicted to social media, and that it can help them in the long run. It is useful to them.
Demographics of our topic: Social media addicts.
Firstly, we think that gender is a key demographic for Social Media Addicts. As there it is recently seen that the amount of girls who use instagram has increased, as more girls have seen to be taking photos of themselves also known as "selfies"and that females want just want to take photos of themselves just to show off what they look like.
In addition, we said that social class is a key demographic of social media. As is you are between the Middle Class (C) it is more likely that you use anysort of social media than a person who is in a higher social class (A/B)
Furthermore, Age is a key demographic for Social Media Addicts.
Social Media's Impact Upon The World
A False Sense of Connection
According to Cornell University's Steven Strogatz, social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much of our time and psychic energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections, he fears, will weaken.
Cyber-bullying
The immediacy provided by social media is available to predators as well as friends. Kids especially are vulnerable to the practice of cyber-bullying in which the perpetrators, anonymously or even posing as people their victims trust, terrorise individuals in front of their peers. The devastation of these online attacks can leave deep mental scars. In several publicised cases, victims have even been driven to suicide. The anonymity afforded online can bring out dark impulses that might otherwise be suppressed.

In this clip which you can see above, it is me (Dominic) and Carl recording our 30 second intro to our magazine style radio show (Trial Version) As me and carl have prepared a new version, which would extend his section of the magazine style radio show.
Learning use of Audacity
As you can see from my audio recording above, I had to edit out certain segments of our trial version of our 30 second audio clip (Trial) As you can see I had to chop the first five seconds out, as it had people talking in the background, and that from the first script, me and carl had an 5 second intro, and that we wanted it to be a clean recording, so we had to get rid of it by highlighting the section which we did not want, and press delete so that it went. Lastly, I put the recording on another audio recordings so that the first five seconds was clear and that you can slightly hear us speaking.
As you can see so far through our magazine style radio show we have started our outline of our program, as my group have our own individual section of the magazine style radio show we had to develop our own script, as you can see I have my own script, and my other script is for carl who put me into his magazine style radio show so that he can have somebody to back him up and that can have a say into his topic. And in the picture and the recording which you see above is me and Carl doing our trial version into his magazine style radio show and that we can improve on it in the future. And that you can see that I have produced my own script for the show, so that I am ready to start my own individual recording into my topic, and that I would need to interview a member from the public to help me carry out the interview.
This is just a preview of what my group has recorded so far for our magazine style radio show. It has a total of 2:10 minutes which is just the start of what we have recorded as our group still needs to record our outside broadcast and our vox pox.
Learning the use of an USB Microphone
Audacity is a recording software which is used to record from a microphone or record from the computer it self. To record from a USB Microphone you have to have one, and have it plugged into the computer. And that you must have the input of the computer to External microphone and that for the output for the microphone it is recommend for having it for headphone that you can have it for feedback.
This is a Blue Yeti which we used to record out voices throughout the duration of the our radio show.
And then on the Apple Mac system pretences we went onto Sound and then ...
When we went onto Sound we put the input to Display Audio USB which is the USB Microphone.
And then on the output of the Sound we put it to display audio which is the USB headphones.
And then we recorded our voices on Audacity in which we used in our magazine radio show.
Learning how to use the Portable Microphone
When we were doing our outside broadcast and our vox pops we had to record them via a Portable microphone. And that in this case we used a Tascam which allows us to record wirelessly from a computer. In a Tascam there is two microphone ports which picks up a person's voice. Additionally, there is an usb which allows us to transport our recording of the Tascam onto the computer via an MP3 file.
And to import the audio to a computer we need a usb cable which is capable for the TASCAM and able to fit into a USB port.
And that the audio is transported onto the mac and then we put it into Audacity and edited it out.
Constructing Title Music
Carl decided to record the title music using Garage Band and that he went into electric piano --> Clean --> Electric in which he ended up with 70s electric piano 28 which was used for our title music.
And then we decided that the title music would be catchy so we decided to put drums into the equation and Carl from there, went to Clean, and then to Ensemble. From there the list shortened down and from there, I ended up with 'Prism Hat Beat 01.1'.
Location of Outside Broadcast
In our outside broadcast we visited two local shops CEX and Three. Both these shops are located on Kilburn High Road. The shops include latest range of technology which we could informed our listeners about. In these shops we interviewed the manger and that he gave us an insight on what they provide and what is in their latest range. These are the places which we have visited ...
- This is CEX which is the place which we have visited and got our outside broadcast interview from.
- Additionally, in this photo Carl is listening back from the audio which he has got from interviewing the manager at CEX.
-
- We also visited the Three mobile store in which we interviewed the manager and got his thoughts and facts on what his best sellers and what he
Evidence of Editing our Magazine Radio Show.
Audience Feedback from our Target Audience:
We cannot judge our magazine style radio show our self, so that I got my
mum in which she is partly based around social media so that she will understand the concept. So I got my Mum to listen to the how and to get her own feedback upon the show. So when my
mum was listening to the show she noticed out various point some good and some
bad. My mum pointed out that the transition from one topic to another was well
done and that the editing was done to a good level. However, she pointed out at
that some points of the show that either the presenter is speaking very quietly
or that the background music is to loud.
I also asked one of my friends for his own input for our magazine style
radio show. I sent my friend the recording over Facebook and so that I could he
is a teen and that our show is targeted for teens and that the way teens
connect to each other is over the internet which we find most fitting. He
pointed out that some of the background music is a bit too loud, and that in
some parts of the show the person who is speaking is a bit static or is that
they may not be talking good enough. However, he pointed out that the editing
was done to a good standard, and that the topics which were covered were good
enough for a teenage demographic to understand.
Language of Comedy
Catchphrases:
I went onto the Open Universities' website, went onto free learning, and searched up "The Language of Comedy"
As a result one of the topics which caught my attention was "Catchphrases"
This is what I clicked on:
"Language of Comedy - Catchphrases"
And via that url, it took me to watch a 1:54 minute video, which is hosted by Charlie Higson and he discuss catchphrases. In which he says that a catchphrase is not intended to be entirely funny, is used week-in, week-out, in which it is used quite often for the effect of humor And that catchphrases can 'undermine the expectation', and that therefore causes a sort humor.
For example, Homer Simpson who is in the TV show "The Simpsons" he usually says the phrase "Doh!" which creates humor from inside of us, but we do not express it, as it is an inside joke. And that it is a famous catchphrase as it is technically used in every Simpson episode, which the phrase "Doh!" could be said as a famous catchphrase.
